Experience

A globally recognised lawyer with 30 years of experience, Hew advises Chinese and international clients extensively on major infrastructure, projects and construction disputes. He is the leading and most experienced international construction disputes lawyer based in Mainland China.

Regularly advising clients in complex cross-border disputes, Hew has acted for both Chinese and international clients in court litigations, arbitrations and mediations in China, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Stockholm, Geneva and London, and on projects stretching from Asia to South America. He also regularly advises client project teams on project implementation issues and disputes and risk mitigation, with a view to avoiding expensive litigation and arbitration.

Hew leads Kewei's Construction and Infrastructure Disputes practice and works with a broader team through the firm's joint operation with international law firm Herbert Smith Freehills.

Splitting his time between Shanghai and Beijing, Hew regularly lectures on PRC and international contract forms and construction law issues at seminars organised by the government, academic institutions and associations. He was appointed as a Visiting Professor to the School of Civil Engineering at Tsinghua University in 2021 and lectures on construction and arbitration law at the school.

He is a member of the China International Economic & Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC)'s Panel of Arbitrators and has conducted CIETAC arbitrations both as counsel and arbitrator. He is also a member of the panel of arbitrators of the Beijing Arbitration Commission, the Shanghai International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission and Chinese Arbitration Association. Hew sits on the legal panel of China Association of International Engineering Consultants.

Fluent in English, Mandarin and Cantonese, Hew obtained a bachelor's degree in law from the National University of Singapore. He qualified as an advocate and solicitor in Singapore and is also qualified to practice in Hong Kong and England & Wales.
